Georgina is blessed with a vibrant artistic life. Whether your interest tends towards visual arts, live theatre, spoken and written word, movies, or live music festivals celebrating classical and folk music, Georgina will keep you engaged and excited.
The Red Barn Theatre is the longest running professional summer theatre in Canada. Begun in 1949 in a barn owned by Jack Sibbald, its first director was a 23 year old named Alfred Mulock. After something of a shaky start, The Red Barn soon found its purpose as a theatre devoted to developing the talents of Canadian playwrights, directors, actors, composers and designers. Its aim is to grow the local theatre-going audience with programming that appeals to all ages and tastes.
All theatres include classics in their repertoire and The Red Barn is no exception, yet its sights are set firmly on the present and future of Canadian theatre, including premieres of important new Canadian works. Even an unfortunate fire in the early summer of 2009 couldn’t halt the Red Barn’s run; for the time being, The Stephen Leacock Theatre located in the Georgina Cultural Centre will host the company and its productions. We are also truly fortunate in Keswick to be home to the Queensville Players, a superb and enthusiastic musical theatre group. Whether you like to sing, dance, or collect tickets, call them - community groups like the Players make Keswick the special place it is
The Georgina region has a rich literary heritage. The immortal Stephen Leacock, destined to be known forever for his humourous depictions of small-town Ontario life, was Georgina's most famous resident. Due in no small part to Leacock’s sterling example, the late Peter Gzowski, Canada’s favourite radio host, championed the cause of literacy for years, and today his name is forever associated with the joy of reading. Fittingly, Georgina celebrates The Peter Gzowski Festival of Stories every summer. Bringing together the community in the form of the Learning Centre for Georgina, the Georgina Pioneer Village and the Georgina Friends of the Library, the Festival delights in stories and storytelling, featuring authors, poets, illustrators, publishers, clowns and musicians every August.
The Georgina Arts Centre and Gallery or GAC is the hub of Georgina’s thriving artistic scene. Offering workshops and camps, GAC is the place to let your creative juices come to the boil, and to admire the imagination and talents of others. Or perhaps you collect – the Gallery Shoppe is definitely a must-see! Every year the GAC participates in the Georgina Studio Tour, a wonderful opportunity to meet local artists and to see where and how they create their work.
Summer is the time for music in the great outdoors, and Georgina looks forward to the twin magic of The Blue Bridge Festival of chamber music and poetry in early June and the Eaglewood Folk Festival late every August. The Blue Bridge Festival is a uniquely exciting event marrying existing artistic traditions to create new visions. This is your chance to mingle with internationally-renowned musicians and poets along a mediaeval-inspired Troubadour Trail, see a water ballet, or simply delight in the happy blend of music and nature. The Eaglewood Folk Festival has a formal mission: to promote folk/roots music; to endorse the creativity and diversity of Native culture, accessibility, health & wellness and environmental concerns; to feature workshops and concerts given by various artists from differing folk/roots music genres. But most importantly, the goal is to have a rocking good time, and in this, success is always assured!
The GEM Movie Theatre offers a wide selection of first run movies. We all need a good dose of Hollywood from time to time – get yours at the GEM!
